STATEHOUSE -

State Senator Kevin Bacon today presented Darlene Cronin, Executive Director of the Central Ohio Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, with a Senate resolution recognizing the month of May 2013 as “Ohio Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.”

“Raising awareness and understanding of cystic fibrosis is critical to efforts that are focused on finding better treatments for those suffering from this chronic disease, and hopefully one day, a cure,” Bacon said. “I applaud the work of organizations such as the Central Ohio Cystic Fibrosis Foundation who provide support and advocacy for those with cystic fibrosis and their families.  Recognizing May as Ohio Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month is just one small way we can show our support as well.”

Cystic fibrosis affects an estimated 30,000 children and adults in the United States, with roughly 1,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease affecting the lungs and digestive system.  Since the 1950’s, great strides have been made in finding treatments for this disease, due in large part to the efforts of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The Ohio General Assembly first declared May as “Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month” in 2005.
