COLUMBUS — State Senator Kevin Bacon announced that legislation naming the Adena Pipe Ohio’s official state artifact has been signed into law by Governor John Kasich. Also present at the signing ceremony were students from the Columbus School for Girls, who came up with the idea for the bill after studying the history of Ohio and the origin of the Adena Pipe. Senator Frank LaRose (R- Copley) co-sponsored Senate Bill 33 with Senator Bacon.

“The students at CSG did an amazing job of advancing their cause,” Bacon said. “They were passionate and they made a strong case for why Ohio should adopt the Adena Pipe as its State Artifact.”

Crafted from native Ohio pipestone, the Adena Pipe is a prehistoric effigy pipe created by the ancient Adena culture. The pipe was discovered in 1901 by William C. Mills within a burial mound on the Chillicothe estate of Ohio’s sixth Governor Thomas Worthington. Governor Worthington had named his home “Adena”, which is a Hebrew word meaning “delightful place.”

Senate Bill 33 passed both legislative bodies by a unanimous vote. Additionally, Governor Kasich along with the Ohio Historical Society revealed for the first time that the pipe is now believed to have been made in 10AD. The Adena Pipe is currently on display at the Ohio History Center in Columbus.
