COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- An Ohio lawmaker wants to give parents a break on sales tax during the back-to-school shopping season.

Rep. Kevin Bacon (R-Minerva Park) has called for a sales tax holiday that would stretch from the first Friday in August to the following Monday.

Bacon's proposal would eliminate sales tax on the following items:

  • School supplies under $20
  • Clothing items under $100
  • Certain electronic items under $750

Bacon described the holiday as a win-win proposition for Ohio families and businesses.

"It's a good opportunity to give a break to our families in Ohio at back to school time, and provide economic stimulus in our retail merchants and our local businesses," Bacon said.

If passed, the proposal would save families an estimated $78 million, and would make Ohio the 19th state to feature a back-to-school sales tax holiday.
