COLUMBUS– State Senators Kevin Bacon (R-Minerva Park) and Jim Hughes (R-Columbus) today joined colleagues from the Ohio House and Senate to recognize former Ohio State University coach Earle Bruce on the occasion of his induction into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame.

The Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame recognizes outstanding senior citizens across the state who have made valuable contributions to their local communities. Bruce received the honor for the achievements he has accomplished through the Earle and Jean Bruce Alzheimer's Research Fund, which he founded with his late wife in 2007.

"Thanks in part to the tireless advocacy of Mr. Bruce, Ohio has become a national leader in the fight against Alzheimer's disease," said Bacon. "The passion and determination that he displayed in leading the Buckeyes to four Big Ten Championships is evident in his extraordinary fight to find a cure."

Well-known for his tenure as head OSU football coach beginning in 1979, Bruce began to advocate for an Alzheimer's cure as he struggled to find high-quality care for his father and older sister.

"The advocacy and support of the Earle and Jean Bruce Alzheimer's Research Fund has propelled the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center to the forefront of Alzeheimer's disease research at a state and national level," added Hughes.

To date, Bruce has helped raise nearly $1 million to combat Alzheimer's disease through supporting drug therapies for the treatment of degenerative disorders, social work and outreach for affected families, imaging trials and research to detect early dementia at earlier stages.
