COLUMBUS -

State Senator Kevin Bacon (R-Minerva Park) encourages all Ohioans to mark their calendars for the state's widely popular Sales Tax Holiday, which begins Friday, August 5th and continues through Sunday, August 7th.

“As a father of three daughters, I understand the high cost associated with the back-to-school shopping season. I’m hopeful that this year’s Sales Tax Holiday will help Ohio families stretch their dollars a little further as they prepare to send their kids back to school.”

For the second year in a row, Ohio consumers will enjoy an exemption from paying sales and use tax on all clothing and footwear up to $75 per item and certain school supplies and instructional materials up to $20 per item.

“Last year’s Sales Tax Holiday was an overwhelming success," said Bacon. "I hope that families will take advantage of this opportunity to save money on essential clothing and school items."

Earlier this year the Ohio General Assembly passed Senate Bill 264, sponsored by Senator Bacon, reestablishing the state's Sales Tax Holiday in time for the 2016 back-to-school shopping season. According to the University of Cincinnati's Economics Center, last year’s event saved Ohio consumers approximately $3.3 million.

Furthermore, retailers experienced a 6.5 percent boost in statewide retail sales in August of 2015. Counties located along state lines fared even better, averaging nearly an 11 percent increase in county sales tax collections. During the Sales Tax Holiday, families can take advantage of the tax-free shopping, which is often combined with additional discounts.
