COLUMBUS -

State Senator Troy Balderson (R-Zanesville) today announced the approval of state funds to assess the sustainability of various locks and dams along the Muskingum River as well as develop a comprehensive master plan for system improvements.

Approved by the Ohio Controlling Board on Monday, the Department of Natural Resources requested the release of $3.2 million to develop a comprehensive master plan and assessment of necessary system upgrades to ensure the dam and lock system's longterm safety and functionality.

"This is a critical, proactive effort to minimize potential risks associated with the historic dam and lock system along the Muskingum River," said Balderson. "Ensuring the safety and sustainability of these systems should also offer peace of mind to the families living in the communities along the river."

Originally developed in the 1840's as part of a river navigation system, Ohio's Muskingum River State Park consists of a series of dams and locks along the river in Muskingum, Morgan and Washington counties.
