STATEHOUSE -

The Ohio House of Representatives today passed Senate Bill 155, sponsored by State Senator Dave Burke (R–Marysville), which will save time and money in organization and travel for certain local government hearings by allowing them to utilize electronic conferencing as opposed to physical, in-person meetings.

“We need to regularly evaluate how each level of government operates to ensure we are taking advantage of every opportunity to become more efficient and be wise stewards of the people’s hard-earned tax dollars,” said Burke. “This is one simple tweak that will save both time and money for our local governments so they can invest their resources in other important initiatives.”

The legislation specifically authorizes joint boards of county commissioners to conduct hearings on existing improvement projects and other routine businesses via teleconference of videoconference.

Senate Bill 155 would also require boards who utilize electronic conferencing to provide for public attendance. It would also require the meeting minutes to identify all participants whether the members attend by teleconference, videoconference, or are physically present.

The bill will now be delivered to Governor Kasich for his signature.
