Senator Bill Beagle today announced that Ohio Governor John R. Kasich has signed Senate Bill 1, the Senate’s flagship legislation to increase training opportunities for unemployed and underemployed Ohioans.
The Senate’s priority legislation creates a $25 million revolving loan fund to be used to train unemployed and underemployed workers for in-demand jobs. Loans from the fund will be provided to individuals through public and private college, universities, and career centers.
“The gap between the skills Ohio’s workers have and the skills Ohio’s employers need is one of the biggest economic issues we face today,” Beagle said, “This legislation leverages the phenomenal training assets we have in our community colleges, career schools and tech schools to address this challenge and get our citizens back to work in high-demand and growing fields.”
Priority will be given to participating educational entities who will work closely with local businesses on the training financed under the program in order to encourage timely job placement for loan recipients upon graduation.
“I continue to hear from employers throughout my district who are struggling to find skilled workers for open jobs in their companies,” Beagle continued. “Senate Bill 1 is about empowering individuals to acquire the necessary training so they can secure good jobs that are available right now and helping businesses find the qualified workers they need to grow and thrive.”
Also receiving the Governor’s signature today were two additional Beagle-sponsored pieces of legislation. Senate Bill 64 clarifies and strengthens Ohio’s child enticement statute following several court rulings declaring the current law to be unconstitutionally over-broad, and Senate Bill 112 extends the Enterprise Zone program as an economic development tool for local governments.
