Columbus -
Governor John Kasich officially signed Senate Bill 120 on Thursday. Sponsored by State Senator Bill Beagle (R - Tipp City), the legislation clarifies that county prosecutors may represent all taxpayer-funded public libraries. The legislation came about in response to a recent federal court ruling that would threaten the long-standing practice of allowing county prosecutors to represent public libraries. Without passage of SB 120, some taxpayer-funded libraries would be required to hire private legal counsel when faced with litigious matters. "A public library is often an essential ingredient to having a strong, well-rounded community," Beagle said. "In trying economic times such as these, libraries shouldn't be burdened with the costly legal fees that come with hiring private counsel." Prior to being signed into law by Kasich, Senate Bill 120 garnered unanimous support in both the Ohio Senate and the Ohio House of Representatives.
