Senator Beagle joins Governor Kasich and proponents of the legislation for ceremonial bill signing.
COLUMBUS - State Senator Bill Beagle (R-Tipp City) today joined Ohio Governor John Kasich and State Representative Marlene Anielski (R-Walton Hills) for a ceremonial signing of Senate Bill 27, which designates the period of each year beginning March 13 and ending April 15 as "Ohio Deaf History Month."

"Deaf history is rich and complex, but not without adversity," said Senator Beagle, who sponsored the legislation in the Senate. "The emphasis on early detection is especially noteworthy and this legislation pays tribute to those who have made important contributions to the deaf community."

Earlier this year, Senator Beagle was joined by an American Sign Language interpreter to deliver proponent testimony during a Senate session.
Advocates for the deaf community believe that Ohio Deaf History Month will be an opportunity to focus efforts on celebrating deaf culture and educating the public about the deaf community's rich history.

The time period for this legislation was chosen to mark two moments–March 13, 1988, when I. Jordan King was chosen as the first deaf president of Gallaudet University, a school for the deaf and hard of hearing, and April 15, 1817, the establishment of the country's first permanent deaf school in Connecticut.

Senate Bill 27 will take effect and become Ohio law on January 18, 2018.
