Columbus – State Senator Edna Brown (D-Toledo) announced today that the State Controlling Board has released $44,288 to replace two hot water boilers and $143,385 for the Perimeter Fence Alarm project at the Toledo Correctional Institution (ToCI).

The boilers being replaced were installed when the facility originally opened 14 years ago. They were damaged during the subzero temperatures experienced this past winter. The perimeter fence alarm system being replaced also dates to the opening of the facility in 2000. The current system is experiencing numerous problems, including sensing device failure, computer failure, and “dead zones” within the system.

“Although the Toledo Correctional Institution has experienced some security issues, improvements continue to be made,” said Senator Brown. “Expenditures like those approved today demonstrate a commitment to improve safety and security at ToCI for both inmates and personnel.”

The Infinity 2000 system that is being installed to replace the current one has already been implemented at several other facilities throughout Ohio since 2009. The Infinity 2000 system is less expensive to install and maintain and the Ohio Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has been satisfied with its performance at the facilities where it is currently in use.
