Columbus—Today,Senator Edna Brown (D-Toledo) introduced SB 154 to abolish the use of capital punishment in Ohio. Senator Brown introduced similar legislation during the 129th and 130th Ohio General Assemblies.

“One of my primary concerns in reintroducing this legislation and renewing my call for abolishment is preventing the execution of an innocent person,” said Senator Brown. “Earlier this month, I met with three men who were falsely convicted in Ohio and sentenced to death. In a system so clearly prone to error, I believe the ultimate and irreversible penalty of execution should not be an option.”

Wiley Bridgeman, Kwame Ajamu and Ricky Jackson were imprisoned and sentenced to death in 1975 and spent a combined total of 105 years in prison before being exonerated and released. They came to the Ohio Statehouse on April 14th along with three other Ohio death row exonerees to advocate for capital punishment reform as a part of a lobby day sponsored by the group ‘Ohioans to Stop Executions.’

In total, nine men have been exonerated and freed from death row in Ohio.

“The tide is slowly turning when it comes to support for capital punishment,” said Senator Brown. “As more people see how the capital punishment system wastes millions of taxpayer dollars, shows no clear societal benefits, and is permeated by human error and bias to the point of being broken, it is inevitable the system will be eliminated one day.”
