Columbus – Today, Senator Edna Brown (D-Toledo) announced the unanimous passage of Resolution 585-15 by Toledo City Council. The resolution was approved by Toledo Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson on December 29, 2015. Resolution 585-15 calls upon the Ohio General Assembly to pass Senate Bill 224 (SB 224), introduced by Senator Brown to address agricultural pollution and reduce toxic algae blooms in Lake Erie.

“I am grateful to the members of Toledo City Council and Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson for their support of SB 224 as we work together to keep Ohio’s drinking water clean and safe,” said Senator Brown. “There is more that can be done to protect our water from contamination, and I am proud to help lead that effort at the Statehouse with support from local leaders and residents in Northwest Ohio.”

SB 224 will:

      • Require the filing of annual reports tracking the sale, transfer and application of manure on the surface of agricultural fields by animal feeding facilities or certified livestock managers.

      • Require certain livestock producers and farmers with more than 50 acres to develop and follow plans to prevent agricultural pollution.

      • Eliminate loopholes and unnecessarily complicated bureaucracy in the enforcement of previously implemented regulations.

SB 224 has been referred to the Senate Agriculture Committee.
