COLUMBUS— Legislation sponsored by State Senator Dave Burke (R- Marysville) that seeks to improve patient safety and oversight of pain management clinics was signed into law yesterday by Governor John Kasich.

Building upon earlier efforts to address the growing problem of prescription drug abuse in Ohio, Senate Bill 301 gives state officials greater authority to inspect pain management clinics, including those suspected of operating without a license. It also enables the State Dental Board to suspend a practitioner’s license if it suspects an individual is engaged in unscrupulous activities.

“We have made great strides in the fight against prescription drug abuse in recent months, but there is still much work to be done,” said Burke, who co-sponsored Senate Bill 301 with State Senator Capri Cafaro (D- Hubbard). “The changes contained in this bill will help keep the public safe by weeding out unscrupulous providers and ensuring that pain management clinics are following all the proper laws and protocols.”

Senator Burke also sponsored House Bill 93, legislation approved last year that addressed the growing problem of prescription drug abuse in Ohio by placing greater accountability on medical professionals and giving local law enforcement more tools to uncover and prosecute criminal activity.
