Labor Day is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions that generations of American workers have made, both past and present. It is also a time to recognize how our workforce has risen to the challenge time and time again by continuing to be the foundation upon which Ohio's economic turnaround has relied in recent years.

In 1890, Ohio led the way by enacting legislation that designated a day to honor the state’s workforce four years before Labor Day became a national holiday. Ever since, we have celebrated the strength and spirit that have become synonymous with the makeup of our state's, and our nation's, workforce.

Labor Day reminds us of the resilience, innovation and determination necessary in our ever-changing and globalized world economy. Our modern American workforce constantly adapts to meet the latest advances in technology and competition is as strong as ever. This has made Ohio's economic turnaround all the more impressive as workers and innovators from across the state have driven our comeback to new heights and paved the way for future success.

Ohio's workforce has weathered the storm and demonstrated the resilience that makes our state great. Ohio has gone from losing 351,000 jobs during the depths of the recession, to creating more than 430,000 new private sector jobs since 2011. Ohio's unemployment rate dropped again in July 2016 to 4.8 percent, outpacing the national average.

I am proud of the countless talented workers in our state who have significantly contributed to the state's growing economy, solidifying Ohio's place as one of the best states live, work and raise a family. In the Ohio Senate, I will continue to fight for a robust, well-equipped and prosperous workforce as jobs and opportunity for all Ohioans remain our number one priority.

Our workforce is second to none because of the hard-working Ohioans that remain steadfast and determined in good times and in bad. I hope that you and your family take time to celebrate, enjoy and remember the contributions of so many this Labor Day weekend.
