Greg Baker of Kettering speaks in support of legislation to designate May 25 as "Ohio National Missing Children's Day."

COLUMBUS—On Tuesday, Greg Baker of Kettering testified in support of legislation, sponsored by State Senator Bob Hackett (R-London), aimed at raising awareness about missing children and supporting the families that continue searching for their loved ones.

"For any parent, a child going missing is a worst nightmare turned into reality," said Senator Hackett. "We want to reassure families that we join them in their resolve to bring their child home, no matter how much time has past."

Nine-year-old Erica Baker went missing in February 1999, prompting a search which ultimately led to the conviction of one of the men responsible for the child's death and disappearance.

Senator Bob Hackett introduced legislation earlier this month, which would designate May 25 as "Ohio National Missing Children's Day" in an effort to raise awareness for missing children and demonstrate solidarity with families as they search for their missing children.

"We owe it to these families to do all we can to inform the public and support efforts to find their missing children," added Hackett.

Greg Baker, Erica's father, testified before the Senate's Local Government, Public Safety and Veterans Affairs Committee on Tuesday in support of the legislation.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and Meghan McCarthy, representing the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, also testified in support of Senate Bill 86.
