Senator Frank LaRose (R-Copley) announced today the signing into law of the state's transportation budget, which invests over $7 billion in the construction and maintenance of state highways and bridges.

The final version of the budget that the Senate passed unanimously last week provides funding for the Ohio Department of Transportation and other agencies that ensure public safety, respond to disasters and monitor the condition of the state's highway system. In an effort to improve the ease of payment for driver's licenses and other related fees, it also includes a provision requiring the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles to accept debit and credit card payment by July of 2016.

LaRose, a cosponsor of the legislation, said "I am pleased we were able to reach a bipartisan consensus to pass legislation that will support and create thousands of new jobs for hardworking Ohioans over the next two years. This budget funds vitally important infrastructure projects so Ohio's entrepreneurs can continue growing our economy, and it ensures that our law enforcement officers have the resources they need to keep the public safe."

The legislation also creates a Joint Legislative Task Force on Department of Transportation Funding, which will issue a report to the legislature by the end of 2016 evaluating ODOT funding needs and other public safety proposals.

The transportation budget goes into effect on July 1, the beginning of the new fiscal year.
