State Senator Frank LaRose (R-Copley Township) announced today the passage of legislation to streamline regulations and increase competitiveness for transportation network companies statewide.

The legislation would make it easier for ridesharing services such as Uber and Lyft to operate in Ohio without confusion that could potentially arise from varying municipal ordinances.

"This fast-growing industry addresses the transportation needs of Ohioans while at the same time creating opportunities for economic growth and entrepreneurship in our state," said LaRose. "It was important to create a simple streamlined statewide regulatory structure and insurance rules as ridesharing services continue to become more prevalent."

The bill is a result of collaboration and compromise between transportation network companies, insurance and taxi industries and LaRose, chairman of the State and Local Government Committee.

The bill adds safety requirements to ensure a rider can identify a TNC vehicle, eases payment methods, and clarifies the different roles performed by taxis and TNC operators. The legislation also grants airports the ability to adopt reasonable standards, regulations, and fees for transportation network companies to make transit to and from airports efficient and convenient.

"Through our collaboration with all parties involved I believe we have created an opportunity for growth while simultaneously providing support to current industries that serve the transportation needs of Ohioans," said LaRose.

Uber announced in September a commitment to recruit and hire 10,000 drivers in Ohio. This legislation ensures that companies such as Uber have the proper legal framework to continue investing in Ohio.

Since Uber's arrival in Ohio in 2013, more than 2 million trips have been coordinated.
