State Senators Frank LaRose and Tom Sawyer honor the Akron Zips during Senate session
COLUMBUS -

State Senator Frank LaRose (R-Copley Township) this week recognized the University of Akron men's football team on winning the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, joining State Senator Tom Sawyer (D- Akron) in presenting the team and head coach Terry Bowden with a resolution on the floor of the Ohio Senate.

"Known as a driven and determined team, the Akron Zips have developed into a remarkable group of student-athletes whose skill on the football field is equaled only by their display of team values on and off the field," said LaRose. "They are a credit not only to their families and their school but also to the superb coaching of their mentor, Coach Terry Bowden,” said LaRose.

Under the guidance of fourth-year head coach Terry Bowden, the Akron Zips finished the 2015 season at 8-5 overall (and finished second in Mid-American Conference play at 5-3) after a 23-21 win over Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl last December. The win was the fifth consecutive for the Zips who enter the 2016 season looking to continue the streak. Akron became bowl eligible for the first time since 2005.
