ELYRIA — AT&T announced Friday it is launching 4G LTE service in Elyria so customers with the latest smart phones and tablets will be able to access a faster network.

The communications giant for months has been working behind the scenes upgrading software and hardware in the area, as well as strengthening its fiber-optic network. Company executives were on hand Friday morning at the West River Road North store near Midway Mall to announce the expanded coverage as customers milled around looking at the latest gadgets.

“When this concept of mobile communication started, we were talking out-of-a-bag phone like this,” said Kevin Lynch, AT&T external affairs director, as she held up one of the first versions of a cell phone from decades ago. “With each technology advancement, companies must be there to offer it to their customers. And now we are happy to know we will offer our Elyria customers service that is faster, more reliable and compatible with the latest devices.”

The Elyria expansion is part of AT&T’s Project Velocity IP, a three-year investment plan announced last fall to expand and enhance its IP broadband network.

Sen. Gayle Manning, R-North Ridgeville, called the investment plan a good thing for the region.

“As transportation chair in the Senate, I know how important infrastructure is to development,” she said. “It’s critical for growing business and key in industries that are big in our area like health care and manufacturing. This allows those businesses and consumers to remain competitive and to foster further economic growth.”

Elyria store manager Brian Uszak said the local customer base has been longing for the 4G LTE service.

“I would say in the last week since we launched, the comments from customers wanting to know when the service would come to the area have stopped,” he said. “Now they just talk about how fast their service is now working.”

AT&T’s 4G LTE service launched in the Cleveland area in May 2012 and has been expanding both west and east since.

Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network has covered Elyria since September 2011.
