Governor John Kasich today signed a measure that will provide a framework for regulation of invasive plant species within the state of Ohio.
Amended Substitute Senate Bill 192, sponsored by Senator Gayle Manning (R–North Ridgeville), will allow the Director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) to develop a scientifically based statewide list of invasive plant species, as well as grant the authority to establish rules regarding the identification and regulation of invasive plant species within the state.
“Ohio’s vibrant agricultural and horticultural industries are an important component of our economy,” Manning said.  “The implementation of a scientifically-based invasive plant list will allow these industries to grow their businesses with greater ease and standardization.”
Tom Demaline, President of Willoway Nurseries in Avon, Ohio joined Manning for the signing.
“Amended Substitute Senate Bill 192 is a common sense approach to the regulation of invasive plants in Ohio,” said Demaline.  “It will ensure that the issue of invasive plant species will be considered scientifically and consistently in the future while providing guidance for regulating truly invasive plants.”
The legislation is supported by the Ohio Nursery & Landscape Association and the Ohio Farm Bureau.
