STATEHOUSE -

State Senator Gayle Manning (R-North Ridgeville) today announced the state's approval of a $6.2 million funding request for the Firelands School District construction project.

"The pre-approval of these funds is great news for students and families in our community," said Manning. "Existing facilities are in need of replacement and a new building will save on costly operating and maintenance expenses associated with the two existing facilities."

The Ohio Facilities Construction Commission pre-approved the request to fund 20 percent of the total construction cost. Construction of a new combined middle-high school to house students in grades 6-12 is expected to cost approximately $32.8 million, shared between the state and local community.

"This additional funding reduces the financial burden on area residents and will hopefully serve as a catalyst for the community to approve the upcoming bond levy," added Manning.

The district must secure the remaining $26.5 million local share of the project budget within 13 months before the state funds can be released.

Senator Manning serves as a member of the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission which approved the request.
