Columbus -
State Senator Gayle Manning (R- North Ridgeville) announced that legislation she sponsored that permits municipally-owned stadiums housing an independent or non-affiliated professional minor league baseball team to receive a property tax exemption was signed into law by Ohio Governor John Kasich earlier this week. "This bill extends the same exemption currently afforded to major-league affiliated baseball teams to independent and non-affiliated teams, which will hopefully encourage more of these teams to locate in Ohio," Manning said. "The city of Avon has benefitted greatly from being the home of the Lake Erie Crushers, and this change will give other cities hoping to attract a team a new tool in those efforts." Manning also thanked Avon Mayor Jim Smith for testifying in support of the legislation. Avon recently completed construction on a stadium for the Crushers, a non-affiliated team in the Frontier League. Besides hosting baseball games, the stadium also hosts local high school games, concerts and charitable events.
