COLUMBUS -

State Senators Larry Obhof (R-Medina) and Jay Hottinger (R-Newark) joined local leaders on Monday to celebrate the inaugural opening of the Holmes County Fair at its new home at Harvest Ridge.

More than 500 supporters attended the opening ceremonies for the 93rd annual Holmes County Fair as leaders from the Holmes County Agricultural Society as well as 4-H and FFA youth officially cut the ribbon, opening the fair for the first time at its new location at Harvest Ridge. The fair began Monday and continues through Saturday, August 13.

"The fair's relocation to Harvest Ridge ensures the longterm viability of the Holmes County Fair," said Obhof. "This project demonstrates what can be achieved when a community unites behind a common purpose."

Located a half mile west of the old fairgrounds, the new site at Harvest Ridge is on higher elevation helping to avoid the chronic flooding problems experienced at the previous location.

"For a county of this size to take on a relocation project of this scale is extraordinary," said Hottinger. "Holmes County residents should be proud of what today represents for the future of this fair and the community."

Kerry Taylor, president of the Holmes County fair board, considers the move to be the beginning of new era in the fair's nearly centurylong history.

Senator Obhof and Senator Hottinger joined Representative Dave Hall (R-Millersburg) in their efforts to secure a $500,000 state capital grant for the construction of the new Tom, Eva & Sterling Humrichouser Livestock Barn, which will serve as a year-round home for events in Holmes County.

In addition to the county fair, the new venue is expected to attract numerous events to the Millersburg area, including conventions, trade shows, and other tourism and industry events.
