Columbus -
State Senator Larry Obhof (R- Montville Township) announced that Senate Bill 165, the "Founding Documents" Bill, has been signed into law by Governor John Kasich. The bill will incorporate the study of certain historically significant documents into Ohio students' American history and government curricula. Under Senate Bill 165, the state's model curricula will include the Declaration of Independence; the United States Constitution, with an emphasis on the Bill of Rights; the Northwest Ordinance; and the Ohio Constitution. The curricula will include reading the primary documents in their historical context. "By studying these primary documents, students will gain a better understanding of our federal and state governments, and will more fully understand their rights," Obhof said. "By including these topics in the model curricula and achievement assessments, we can help ensure that all Ohioans are adequately prepared for their role in democratic self-governance." High school students will be tested on their knowledge of these documents as part of the state exams on American history and American government.
Senator Obhof represents the 22nd Ohio Senate District, which encompasses all of Medina, Holmes and Wayne counties as well as portions of Ashland County. For more information, please visit
