COLUMBUS— State Senator Larry Obhof recently introduced Senate Bill 390, which would authorize the transfer of 4.7 acres of land from the State of Ohio to the Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society. The land will be used by the Society as part of their ongoing efforts to preserve the historic Mansfield Reformatory.

“This land transfer will enable the Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society to continue their work to preserve this historic site and ensure it remains a vital part of the Mansfield community,” Obhof said. “The Reformatory draws thousands of visitors from around the globe each year, and is an important contributor to the economy of the region.”

As part of the transfer agreement, two parcels of land currently owned by the Preservation Society will be transferred to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC).

“Anticipated utilization of this land will greatly enhance the effort begun in 1995 to preserve this unique structure and continue to develop an outstanding venue for the local community,” said Ed Meehan, Director of the Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society. “We extend our gratitude to ODRC and the Ohio Department of Administrative Services, Senator Larry Obhof and Representative Jay Goyal for taking the initiative to introduce this legislation that will benefit both the Mansfield Reformatory Preservation Society and the State of Ohio.”

The Mansfield Reformatory opened in 1896 and housed more than 155,000 inmates before its closure in 1990. The facility is visited by thousands of visitors each year from across the world, and has served as a shooting location for a number of movies and television shows – most notably the 1994 film “The Shawshank Redemption.”

Senate Bill 390 will now be assigned to a Senate committee for further consideration. Similar legislation has been introduced in the Ohio House of Representatives by State Representative Jay Goyal (D- Mansfield).
