STATEHOUSE -

Senator Larry Obhof (R–Medina) today announced the Ohio Senate passed House Bill 10, which seeks to establish increased levels of accountability for local government fiscal officers.

The need for additional accountability was brought to light after an incident occurred in Stark County whereby a public employee stole nearly $3 million from the county treasury. This theft contributed to a serious county deficit that year.

“We need to hold all public officials to a high standard and keep them accountable for the people’s money that is in their care,” said Obhof.

House Bill 10 establishes procedures for removing fiscal officers from office if they engage in illegal acts in the performance of their duties.

The bill also establishes an education program that all local government fiscal officers must complete within their first year in office.

House Bill 10 will now return to the Ohio House of Representatives for concurrence before being presented to the Governor for his consideration.
