Senator Larry Obhof (R-Medina) announced the Senate’s passage of bills aimed at stopping human trafficking and improving investigations of sexually oriented crimes.
House Bill 130, the End Demand Act, seeks to further strengthen Ohio’s fight against human trafficking. Among its provisions, House Bill 130 will increase penalties for solicitation of a minor, raising such crimes from a misdemeanor to a felony. The bill will also prohibit advertising massage and related services with the suggestion or promise of illegal sexual activity.
“House Bill 130 will help prevent trafficking and will provide tools that law enforcement needs to protect our communities,” Obhof said.
House Bill 130 will now proceed to the Governor for his signature.
Senate Bill 316 would require Ohio law enforcement agencies to eliminate the existing backlog of rape kits. In 2011, Attorney General Mike DeWine asked law enforcement offices to send all untested rape kits to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) for processing. Of the 3,807 kits tested as of June 1, 2014, 1,302 produced a DNA match or investigative lead.
“Modern technology has given us greater ability to solve these crimes,” Obhof said. “It is crucial that we process these kits as soon as possible and get justice for the victims.”
Senate Bill 316 will proceed to the Ohio House of Representatives for further consideration.
