COLUMBUS– The Ohio Senate today passed the Agriculture Nutrients Bill, sponsored by Senator Bob Peterson (R–Fayette County), which creates a groundbreaking fertilizer applicator license program. Through the responsible use of agriculture nutrients, Senate Bill 150 works to protect the state’s water quality while sustaining Ohio’s agriculture industry.
“As a farmer, I know the importance of establishing prudent plans for using agricultural nutrient products.  These nutrients are vital to keep our crops growing,” said Peterson. “This bill strikes a balance between the viability of our agriculture industry and protecting the health of the state’s water supply.”
Senate Bill 150 would require the Director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture to create a fertilizer applicator license program modeled after the existing highly successful pesticide applicator license. The program requires fertilizer applicators to receive continuing education on the 4R’s of nutrient management (Right fertalizer source, at the Right time, in the Right place, and the Right rate) and the latest research on improving the water quality of the Ohio’s inland lakes and streams.
“This bill is a prime example of the Agriculture industry stepping up and helping address a state- wide problem”, Peterson said. “Better stewardship of agricultural nutrients will not alone solve Ohio’s algal bloom problem, but it is most certainly, a step in the right direction. I appreciate that the Agriculture industry is an important part of the solution.”
Senator Peterson jointly sponsored the measure with Senator Cliff Hite (R–Findlay), who serves as the Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman.
Senate Bill 150 will now move to the Ohio House of Representative for further consideration.
