A native son of the Mahoning Valley, Senator Schiavoni grew up on the South Side of Youngstown before moving to Boardman, where he graduated from Boardman High School. Taking after his father, Schiavoni spent his free time in the boxing ring and won the Golden Gloves tournament in Youngstown in 1995.

Columbus—State Senators Joe Schiavoni (D-Boardman) and Cliff Hite (R-Findlay) announced bipartisan legislation to enable more Ohioans in rural areas to gain access to broadband internet service.  The bill would create a $50 million per year grant program using existing funding from Ohio Third Frontier bond revenue.
