Columbus –Today, Senator Charleta B. Tavares (D-Columbus) took the oath of office to serve in the Ohio Senate for the 131st General Assembly.  Senator Tavares will represent the 15th Senate District that encompasses Columbus, Bexley and parts of Grandview Heights and Reyonldsburg. She was also sworn in as the Assistant Minority Leader.
 
“I am honored to serve the residents of the 15th Senate District; Ohio for the next four years” said Senator Tavares. "Our Leadership Team will continue to stand up, speak up and take action to address the issues of importance to Ohioans.”
 
Senator Tavares is a committed public servant who served as a member of Columbus City Council from 1999 to 2010. Prior to joining Council, Tavares left a legacy for the citizens of Ohio during her 5 ½-year tenure in the Ohio General Assembly as the State Representative in the 22nd House District. Her priorities will continue to be focused on Medicaid expansion, reducing health disparities and infant mortality and eliminating the racial discrimination in our judicial system.

Assistant Democratic Leader Charleta B. Tavares Reflects On Mental Health Awareness Month

 

May is Mental Health Month sponsored by Mental Health America. This year’s theme is called “B4Stage4” which focuses on diagnosing and addressing mental illnesses before Stage 4 in which symptoms are more severe and difficult to treat.

Mental illnesses are sometimes crippling disorders that affect the lives of millions of Americans and oftentimes go unannounced because of the stigma associated with them.

Today, during Senate Session, Assistant Democratic Leader Charleta B. Tavares (D-Columbus) honored the life of former Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Paul Tipps who died on April 21st at the age of 78. During his tenure, the Ohio Democratic Party controlled all statewide offices in Ohio and the Ohio legislature.
