Columbus—Senator Charleta B. Tavares (D- Columbus) was presented with the 2014 Don Stricker Legislative Bulldog Award from the Ohio Association of Community Action Agencies (OACAA) on January 30 at their 2014 Winter Legislative Conference in Columbus.

The award is named after the late Don Stricker, former executive director of WSOS Community Action, for his resolute efforts on behalf of low-income Ohioans. The award is given to an Ohio legislator who shares Mr. Stricker’s tireless devotion to the underprivileged and disenfranchised, a dedication to healthy communities, a fearless and passionate commitment to doing the right thing, and an acute awareness of the importance of collaborative relationships.

"I am honored to join the previous award champions of the disenfranchised, economically and/or socially challenged Ohioans,” stated Assistant Democratic Leader, Senator Charleta B. Tavares.  “It is a privilege to receive this award as Don Stricker (deceased), was my friend and former president of the WSOS Community Action Agency in Fremont, Ohio. The award presentation was made even more special because it was presented by my friend, former staffer and mentee—IMPACT Community Action CEO Bo Chilton—and I received it along with other strong, tenacious, results-oriented and people advocates like my mentor, former Senator Ray Miller.”

Senator Tavares has introduced significant legislation in the 130th General Assembly focused on the prevalent needs of Ohio’s underprivileged population. The bills include the following:

  • Senate Bill 19 – This bill would create the Ohio Family Stability Commission to address issues of out-of-wedlock births, divorce, child-welfare, domestic violence and increasing support for stable families.
  • Senate Bill 70 - Prohibits employers from discriminating against applicants and current employees based on their credit history.
  • Senate Bill 262 Federal SNAP Benefit Waiver - Requests the federal waiver of time limits for childless adults to continue receiving federal SNAP benefits.
  • Senate Bill 151 Ohio Healthcare Professional Loan Repayment Program - Provides grants to healthcare professionals to assist in the repayment of loans for those who work in an urban or rural area where there is a health care shortage.

May is Mental Health Month sponsored by Mental Health America. This year’s theme is called “B4Stage4” which focuses on diagnosing and addressing mental illnesses before Stage 4 in which symptoms are more severe and difficult to treat.

Mental illnesses are sometimes crippling disorders that affect the lives of millions of Americans and oftentimes go unannounced because of the stigma associated with them.

Join me in spreading the word about “mental health” throughout the month of May so that your friends, family, and community can get the support and education that they need.
