Columbus –State Senator Cecil Thomas (D-Cincinnati) issued the following statement today after Governor Kasich issued an executive order based on recommendations from his Task Force on Community-Police Relations.  The executive order contains many of the provisions found in Senate Bill 23—legislation sponsored by Senator Thomas.

“I am pleased Governor Kasich has taken this issue seriously and listened to the recommendations from his task force.  His executive order contains many of the policies that have proven successful in Cincinnati and that I included in my legislation.  What is important now is following through on the recommendations and turning words into actions.  To make a difference in communities across the state we need the necessary funding, additional accountability and firm deadlines for implementing the task force recommendations.  The work is just beginning on improving community-police relations, but it is a goal that is achievable as we have demonstrated in Cincinnati.”

As a veteran of the Cincinnati Police Department, and former Executive Director of the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission, Senator Thomas was a leader in diffusing civil unrest in Cincinnati in 2001. Senate Bill 23 is based off of policies that have proven to be successful in Cincinnati and other communities.
