COLUMBUS -

State Senator Joe Uecker (R-Miami Township) today introduced legislation that would create a Down syndrome awareness license plate with proceeds supporting advocacy efforts for individuals living with Down syndrome and their families.

Down syndrome occurs in one out of every 792 births. More than 250,000 people nationwide are living with Down syndrome. Advances in research and rehabilitative services allow many individuals living with Down syndrome to lead successful and fulfilling lives, contributing much to their families and communities. However, continued support and understanding is crucial in combating misconceptions about the condition.

Senator Uecker's proposed legislation is one of many efforts taking place across Ohio through October as part of Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

“I’m honored to join families across Ohio in raising awareness about Down syndrome," said Uecker. "Any way we can provide support to Ohioans who live with Down syndrome and their families is important."

For each specialty license plate sold, the Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio and its partners will receive $25 to support statewide advocacy efforts.

Senate Bill 359 will be referred to a committee for further consideration.

Ohioans can learn more about Down syndrome and the organizations around Ohio that are raising awareness everyday by visiting www.downsyndromeohio.org.
