COLUMBUS— Today, State Senator Kenny Yuko comments on the unveiling of Army Specialist 4 Lawrence George Stapleton Memorial Highway on I-90 between mile marker 182 and 185.

“It is an honor to gather as a community to recognize a young man who served and sacrificed his life,” said Senator Yuko (D-Richmond Heights). “Naming this highway in his honor is one small way to thank Specialist Stapleton for his service and sacrifice, and for his community to show gratitude.”

George Stapleton was born on August 10, 1946, in Euclid. At the age of 20 he joined the U.S. Army in October of 1966. On August 4, 1967 he was killed in action due to a helicopter crash during the Vietnam War. The military has honored him by giving him the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. Also, Washington D.C. has honored Specialist Stapleton by engraving his name on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.

“I received the special request to honor Specialist Stapleton from several constituents. His friends, neighbors, and family members remember him for the sacrifice he made for his country and the incredible impression he left upon the people who met him. They remember him as a spirited and caring young man who contributed immeasurably to the world around him,” said Senator Yuko.

Family and friends will gather at the City of Euclid’s Council Chambers at 2:00 p.m. where remarks will be made by Mayor Kirsten Holzheimer Gail, Rev. Rosalind C. Hughes from Church of the Epiphany, Senator Kenny Yuko, Vietnam Veteran Jack Walters, and Specialist Stapleton’s sister Marsha Stapleton.
