COLUMBUS—Today, State Senator Kenny Yuko (D-Richmond Heights) introduced Senate Bill 161, which would designate a portion of I-271 in Beachwood as the “Captain Michael Palumbo Memorial Highway.” Captain Palumbo was a vocal advocate for benefits for firefighters. He was the namesake for a recent bill to help provide workers compensation to firefighters with certain job-related cancers. Governor Kasich signed the Michael Louis Palumbo Jr. Act into law earlier this year.

“Michael Palumbo was an incredible man,” said Senator Yuko. “I am truly honored to have had the opportunity to know Michael and his family over the years. He is a true hero and will be dearly missed. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of firefighters.”

Michael Palumbo Jr. was born on December 26, 1967, in Cleveland. Palumbo was a dedicated firefighter, serving both Beachwood and Willowick Fire Departments for over 25 years. At Beachwood Fire Department, he served as captain, SWAT medic, part of the HAZMAT team, and a member of the honor guard. He was also a member of Local 2388.

Michael died on May 24, 2017, after a long battle with a very aggressive form of brain cancer with no known cure. He leaves behind his wife of 23 years and 5 children, ranging in age from 8 to 21.

Under this bill, the portion of I-271 running north and south between mile markers 28 and 32 would be designated in honor of Captain Palumbo.
