COLUMBUS—Today, State Senator Kenny Yuko (D-Richmond Heights) introduced Senate Bill 291, which would designate the month of September as Pain Awareness Month.

“It is critical that we help raise awareness and understanding of physical pain and pain management,” said Senator Yuko. “We do not yet know enough about chronic pain, which can lead to a frustrating lack of proper diagnosis and treatment.”

Nearly 100 million Americans struggle with chronic pain – more than diabetes, heart disease, and cancer combined. Chronic pain can result from a variety of underlying problems, and for many the pain cannot be cured, only treated. Senator Yuko encourages those who live with these issues to seek assistance in adopting a healthy pain management plan.

“I must continue my advocacy for those who struggle with pain. The public needs to be aware that just because you can’t witness a person’s pain, it doesn’t mean someone isn’t suffering,” said Senator Yuko. “I hope this bill will pass with bipartisan support and bring healthy and safe pain management to the forefront of patient care.”

Senator Yuko introduced similar legislation in the House during the 128th and 129th General Assemblies; his legislation passed the House during the 129th.
