Columbus, Ohio—State Senator Kenny Yuko (D-Richmond Heights) issued the following statement in reaction to a press conference held today by Secretary of State Jon Husted.  Senator Yuko is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Government Oversight and Reform committee.

“Of course maintaining voter rolls is important. But, it appears Secretary Husted continues to place greater importance on removing people from the voting rolls than on improving Ohio’s dismal voter turnout.  The cases of registered non-citizens he highlighted today accounted for less than 0.006% of registered voters and did not impact the outcome of any election.

“Every vote and every voter matters.  As the chief elections official of the state, Secretary Husted should be focused on improving our compliance with motor voter laws, implementing online voter registration and using new data sharing capability to find eligible but unregistered voters.

“After presiding over a statewide election with record low voter turnout, Secretary Husted should be more concerned about increasing voter participation.”
