Fedor Celebrates Women's History Month, Creation of Northwest Ohio Women's Council
March 21, 2022

Today, state Senator Teresa Fedor (D-Toledo) joined the Women of Toledo to celebrate the creation of The Northwest Ohio Women’s Business Council (WBC), an initiative dedicated to supporting and recognizing female entrepreneurs whose businesses contribute to their communities’ economic wellbeing.

“This is truly a historical moment for all women and girls who the Women of Toledo serve,” Fedor said. “The Women of Toledo have done great work advocating for the economic development and equality for all women. I am honored to have witnessed such a meaningful moment in the fight for women’s equality and look forward to learning more from the women entrepreneurs who the council will highlight.”

The creation of The Northwest Ohio Women’s Business Council comes after the Toledo City Council voted on and signed the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and in conjunction with Women’s History Month, on Equal Pay Day, March 15. The CEDAW, globally known as the Bill of Rights for Women, is an international treaty that affirms equality for women around the world. The women on the council will work to uplift the status of other women entrepreneurs in the community.

“By signing onto the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, Toledo City Council has ensured that our city will continue to fight for women’s equality,” Fedor said. “This is an issue everyone needs to work on together in order to make changes in our city, our nation and internationally. I am grateful for the work the Women of Toledo has done in advocating for our city to join CEDAW. Because of their efforts, Toledo is making women’s equality a priority.”

The program announcing the creation of the Northwest Ohio WBC included stories of women entrepreneurs from the Greater Toledo area on their historical journeys to economic empowerment, and featured exhibitions included Betty Timko, Ella P. Stewart, Florence Scott Libbey, Grace Smith, Margaret “rusty” Monroe, Marge Roth, Mildred Benson, Rose LaRose, Rose Ondrus and Sophia Lustig. The Citizen of the World, Soon-Young, with the United Nations Cities of CEDAW, also spoke.
